I

f you have a sleep disorder, it is important to visit our sleep clinic to learn more about how we can help you to get a good night's sleep and improve your health. Since now is the time that everyone is making New Year's resolutions, this is an excellent time to resolve to improve your health by getting a good night's sleep. Unfortunately, many people have no idea that they actually have a sleep disorder. Therefore, people that could benefit by visiting our sleep clinic often don't.

To that point, below is a list of symptoms to watch for. If you experience them, or even one or two of them, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with our clinic.

  • Falling asleep while driving
  • Falling asleep while working at the computer or doing sedentary activities
  • Snoring loudly at night
  • Making choking noises while sleeping
  • Waking up feeling exhausted even after a full night's sleep
  • Deteriorating health and constant fatigue
  • Not being able to stay up after dinner

These are just a few of the ways that a sleep disorder can manifest itself. If you are experiencing these symptoms, visiting our sleep clinic can help in two ways. First, it allows us to determine if you do have a true sleep disorder and second, it allows us to treat it.

Treating Sleep Disorders

In our sleep clinic we are able to treat sleep disorders using noninvasive methods. This is important because we believe that if something can be treated without the need for surgery or an invasive procedure, it should. Typically, we address sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea using an oral appliance. This is a removable device that can be worn when sleeping and taken out in the morning. It is comfortable, made for a patient's specific measurements and affordable.

For example, when treating obstructive sleep apnea, we have patients wear an oral appliance to prevent the jaw bone from falling backwards at night. This is necessary because if the jaw falls backwards, the tongue will fall backwards with it. Then, the tongue will block the airway and make it impossible for someone to get enough oxygen while sleeping. This can result in snoring and choking at night while the body attempts to remove the tongue from its position. Simultaneously, without enough oxygen, a person will wake feeling fatigued, organs will not function as well as they should and the body will live in a constant state of exhaustion. Given how easy it is to treat this condition, we recommend that anyone exhibiting the symptoms visit our clinic for help. There is simply no reason not to.
